James is considered one of the most renowned sports artists in the country. His skill embodies a compelling sense of realism. His remarkable, realistic qualities evoke a great deal of emotion. James' theme in every painting is the image of the human spirit. James indicates that being an artist comes naturally for him; it is as much as an act of will as it is the product of inspiration.
"Sometimes, I step back and wonder if what I am painting will be rendered the way I want it to, but when I am finished, the painting looks exactly the way I imagined it."
"I don't concentrate too much on painting a flawless image. I let my eyes and hands do the work. Just as a poet expresses himself through words, I express myself through paint. I feel fortunate to be able to use my art as a means of communication."
A mix of the old and the new, the historic and the post-postmodern: Art to Dream For is proud to present the work of American artist J.R. Sell – “Jack” to his friends. When asked to prepare a Bio of myself I was wondering how best to describe my love of photographing wildlife. I have always loved wildlife but it wasn’t till a buddy of mine was going out to Colorado to visit family and take some wildlife photos that got me started. I thought what a great opportunity to see the Rocky Mountains and see if possible some wildlife.
That was back in 2007 and so I went out and bought my first real quality camera gear. That trip and my interactions with wildlife were amazing and I realized then that I was capturing a moment in time that would never be repeated again. I tried to capture the animals just being themselves with a healthy awareness not to invade their space.
We are losing more and more wildlife every day and if through my photography I can make more people realize how important it is to protect these beautiful animals from extinction and to appreciate their true beauty, then I have helped, and what a beautiful feeing that is! Remember that your interactions with wildlife are but moments in time so relish them because they are precious.
It's hard to imagine photographing a wedding with a 4x5 Speed Graphic press camera while using flash bulbs as your primary lighting source. As a teenager, that's how I started as an apprentice within my father's photography business then eventually branching out on my own (all while following a career with E.I.Dupont Photo Products Research).
Today digital photography is used by the majority of people, we can look at the viewer and immediately see our results. This has become an obvious teaching mechanism for both adults and children. When you come upon a unique scene or capture a rarely seen bird or animal we review that photo many times and enjoy every review.
I have been blessed to have the opportunity to tutor children of various ages and you can't help but smile when you watch them take their first photos. It could be a pet, wildlife or fellow student, there are memories being made.
Let's spend some time enjoying the outdoors with our family and friends then we can all encourage and teach our children to enjoy and capture it's beauty.
